"Understanding and Treating Neck Pain: An Osteopath's Perspective"

Stiff neck but why?

Neck pain is a common complaint that can stem from various causes, including poor posture, stress, and injury.

As an osteopath in Epsom, I frequently encounter patients seeking relief from this discomfort.

One primary cause of neck pain is poor posture, often resulting from prolonged periods of sitting, especially when using devices like computers or smartphones. This condition, known as "tech neck," can lead to muscle strain and tension around the neck and shoulders.

Stress is another significant contributor to neck pain. When we're stressed, we unconsciously tighten our muscles, particularly those in the neck and shoulders, we may also clench our jaw and grind our teeth leading to discomfort and, over time, pain.

Injuries, such as whiplash, can also cause neck pain. The sudden force stretches and tears the muscles and tendons in your neck, resulting in pain and stiffness.

As an osteopath, I use a variety of manual therapy techniques to treat neck pain. These include myofascial release, which involves gentle pressure to the connective tissue to relieve tension and improve mobility. Muscle energy techniques, where the patient's own movements are used to stretch and relax the muscles, can also be beneficial.

In addition to these treatments, I often recommend exercises to strengthen the neck and improve posture, as well as strategies for stress management.

Remember, each person is unique, and so is their pain. Therefore, treatment is always tailored to the individual's needs.

If you're experiencing neck pain, don't hesitate to seek help. Osteopathy offers a holistic approach to pain relief and overall well-being.
